The lent is a period lasting for forty days .It is followed by christians as a commemoration of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert before beginning his public ministry. This is referred to in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
This was the period during which Jesus endured temptation of God. Lent is the six week period leading upto Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on holy Saturday . The period actually extends to 46 days but omitting the Sundays it is taken to 40 days. The last week of lent is the holy week, starting with palm Sunday.
Following the New testament Jesus' crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday and the beginning of the next week looks forward to the joyful celebration of Easter Sunday recalls the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The English word LENT is a shortened form of old English word 'len' meaning SPRING SEASON which otherwise denotes a fresh beginning with Christ.
There are various symbolifications to the lent days.Purple is the colour associated to .It represents repentance.Stones are usual symbols of lent. They symbolize austerity and rigor, desolation, misery and sadness As Jesus went into the desert among the stones so it is so.
Ash is another symbol that refers to repentance in the Bible.Fish is also a symbol of lent which calls us to fast.It is worth seeing these symbols and signs as a way to approach God's plan of salvation for us.
